Rail profiles
Rail section is a load calculation, not a preference — heavier is not always better, just heavier to buy and fix.
What it does
Rails do two jobs. In normal running they keep the car aligned; in a safety gear trip they are what the wedges clamp onto to stop the car. That second job is why rail specification is a safety matter, not a comfort one.
Specification
Rail section is selected against car weight, rated load and safety gear type. Heavier sections are required for forklift-loaded goods platforms and for MRL installations where the drive is rail-mounted.
When to replace
Rails degrade slowly, so occupants stop noticing — until they all complain at once. These are the symptoms worth investigating.
Alignment or guide shoe wear. Almost always fixable by adjustment rather than replacement.
Fishplate joints out of line. Cheap to correct, unpleasant to live with.
Usually a lubrication failure. Left alone it accelerates guide shoe wear considerably.
Evidence of a past trip. It should be inspected and recorded, not simply cleaned off.

Photographs of the nameplate save days. Most delays come from identifying the wrong variant, not from supply.

Guide rail price is set by profile — T70 light-duty sections cost least, T127 and heavier freight or MRL sections cost most, with T89/T90 standard passenger rails in between. Length, bracket spacing and shaft construction (RCC or steel) also move the figure. Send the travel height and car weight for an exact quantity and price.
Effectively the life of the building if they are aligned and lubricated. Rails are usually the part that survives two generations of controller.
