Emergency Breakdown Service

One number, answered around the clock by someone who can diagnose the fault over the phone and dispatch with the right part. If anyone is inside the car, stop reading and call.

Scope

Trapped passengers come before everything.

Every other job we have is reschedulable. Somebody stuck in a lift is not, and that is the only triage rule we operate.

MB Elevator emergency breakdown response team attending a call at night
The line reaches a technician Not a script, not a ticket queue. Someone who can ask the right three questions and often name the fault before leaving the workshop.

What is included

  • 24/7 call answering. Every day of the year, answered by someone technical rather than by an answering service.
  • Trapped-passenger priority. Entrapments are triaged above all other work, without exception.
  • Phone diagnosis. Often enough to identify the fault and bring the correct part on the first visit.
  • Safe release procedure. Manual brake release and controlled levelling, carried out only by trained engineers.
  • Fault diagnosis on site. The cause identified, not just the symptom cleared, before the lift returns to service.
  • Return-to-service test. The lift is tested under load before it carries passengers again.

If someone is trapped

What to do while you wait for us.

Worth printing and putting in the security cabin. The most dangerous thing anyone can do in an entrapment is attempt a rescue without training.

Talk to them and keep talking

Establish contact through the intercom or the door. The car is ventilated and will not fall — telling them so is the single most useful thing you can do.

Call the breakdown line immediately

State clearly that there are people inside, how many, and whether anyone is unwell, elderly or a child.

Do not try to force the doors

Landing doors are interlocked for a reason. Forcing them creates an open shaft, which is far more dangerous than waiting.

Do not switch the lift off and on

It will not release anybody and it can lose the fault information we need to fix the cause.

Keep the landing clear

The engineer needs unobstructed access to the landing and the machine room or top landing panel.

Let the engineer do the release

Manual brake release requires training. An untrained release can drop the car, and people have been badly hurt this way.

What we attend

Calls that count as an emergency.

If in doubt, call. We would far rather attend something that turned out to be routine than miss something that was not.

Immediate

Passengers trapped in the car

Always immediate priority, at any hour, contract or no contract.

Immediate

Burning smell or smoke

Take the lift out of service, keep people away from the shaft and call at once.

Urgent

Car moving with doors open

Stop using the lift immediately. This is a door interlock failure and is genuinely dangerous.

Urgent

Sudden loud noise or jolt

Something mechanical has changed. Better to have the lift stopped and inspected than to keep running it.

Common questions

What people ask before booking

What is the response time?

For entrapments we mobilise immediately. For other faults it depends on your contract and location — AMC customers have a defined window written into the agreement.

Do you attend lifts you do not maintain?

For entrapments, yes, wherever we can reach in time. Nobody should be left in a car over a contract question.

Is emergency call-out charged separately?

For AMC customers it is included within the contract response window. For non-contract buildings it is chargeable, and we tell you the rate when you call.

How long can someone safely stay in a stopped lift?

A lift car is ventilated and cannot fall — the safety gear holds it on the rails. It is uncomfortable, not dangerous. Keep talking to them.

Can our security guard release passengers?

No, unless they are trained and authorised for that specific lift. Untrained manual release is one of the most dangerous things that happens around lifts.
