Elevator Safety Inspection

Testing the systems that only matter on the day everything else has failed. Every one of them is designed to be tested, and every one of them degrades quietly if it is not.

Scope

The devices that exist for one bad day.

A governor that has not tripped in ten years is not proven — it is unproven. Safety gear, brakes and interlocks are built to be tested, and testing is the only evidence they still work.

Certified engineer carrying out an elevator safety inspection and load test
Results in writing, pass or fail You get the actual readings, not a certificate with a tick. If something failed, the report says so and says what it needs.

What is included

  • Full-load and overload test. The car loaded to rated capacity and beyond, with brake holding and levelling verified.
  • Overspeed governor trip test. The governor tripped and its actual trip speed recorded against its rating.
  • Safety gear test. Safety gear engaged on the rails under controlled conditions and its grip verified.
  • Brake test. Holding capacity under full load, lining wear measured and gap setting recorded.
  • Door interlock verification. Every landing door checked to confirm the car cannot move with any door unlocked.
  • Emergency systems check. Alarm, intercom, emergency lighting and manual rescue operation, all confirmed working.

On the day

How an inspection runs.

Allow half a day per lift and expect it to be out of service throughout. Test weights have to be carried in, which is usually the part that needs planning.

Arrange access and take the lift out of service

The car cannot be in public use during testing. We agree the window with the building manager beforehand.

Visual and mechanical inspection

Ropes, sheaves, rails, guide shoes, buffers and machine condition recorded before any test is run.

Door and safety circuit verification

Every landing door interlock checked individually. A single faulty interlock is a serious finding.

Load and overload testing

Test weights loaded to rated capacity and beyond, with brake holding and levelling measured.

Governor and safety gear trip

The governor tripped and the safety gear engaged under controlled conditions, with results recorded.

Report issued

Every reading written down, with any failures listed and what each one needs to pass.

When to book

Four moments an inspection is not optional.

Beyond the annual cycle, these are the points where testing protects the building owner as much as the passengers.

Annual

The routine cycle

Once a year for normal duty. More often for hospitals, industrial duty and public buildings.

Handover

Before a new lift enters service

Full load and overload testing witnessed at commissioning, with the results forming part of handover.

Takeover

When changing maintenance contractor

An independent condition record at the point of transfer protects you from inheriting somebody else’s neglect.

After an incident

Following any trip or entrapment

Anything that put passengers at risk should be followed by testing, not just a reset and a reassurance.

Common questions

What people ask before booking

How often is an inspection required?

Annually for normal duty. Hospitals, public buildings and industrial installations warrant more frequent testing, and insurers sometimes specify their own interval.

How long does it take?

Around half a day per lift. The lift is out of service throughout, and test weights need to be brought in and carried to the car.

What happens if something fails?

The report states the failure and what it needs. Where the finding is safety-critical, we recommend keeping the lift out of service until it is corrected, and we say so plainly.

Do you inspect lifts you do not maintain?

Yes, and it is often more useful that way. An independent inspection is a genuine second opinion on the contractor as well as the lift.

Is this the same as a maintenance visit?

No. Maintenance keeps the lift running; inspection proves the safety systems still function. They are different work and should not substitute for each other.

When was the governor last tripped?

If nobody in the building can answer that, it is time. Book an inspection and get the actual readings in writing.
