The controller is the part of a lift that ages fastest. Rails and structure last thirty years; control electronics rarely reach fifteen before parts get scarce.

Configurations

Four ways a control panel gets configured, and where each one fits.

Configuration is decided by how many cars share the shaft group, not by building size alone.

Simplex VVVF

One controller, one car. The straightforward configuration for a standalone lift with no group dispatch logic to manage.

Two-speed relay-based

Switches between two fixed speeds instead of ramping. Still found in older buildings, and the panel most often replaced during modernization.

What it does

It reads the calls and drives the motor.

On a modern lift this is a VVVF drive that ramps speed up and down rather than switching between two fixed speeds. That single difference is what people feel as a smooth stop.

An automatic rescue device brings the car to the nearest landing and opens the doors on power failure. On a residential building it is usually worth the addition.

When to replace

When a controller has reached the end.

Controllers rarely fail outright. They become unsupportable, which is a slower and more expensive problem.

Boards are hard to source

Once a board takes weeks to find, every future fault becomes a long outage regardless of who maintains the lift.

A two-speed drive switches rather than ramps. No amount of maintenance fixes that — it is a drive characteristic.

Ageing relays and contactors produce faults that come and go. Chasing them costs more over time than replacing the panel.

An old drive draws substantially more than a modern VVVF unit, which shortens the payback on replacement.

Photographs of the nameplate save days. Most delays come from identifying the wrong variant, not from supply.

  • Machine nameplate photograph. Make, model and serial number of the traction machine the controller will drive.
  • Existing panel photograph. Interior of the cabinet, showing the drive, contactors and terminal layout.
  • Lift figures. Rated load, speed, number of stops and whether the lift works alone or in a group.
  • Door type. Automatic or manual, and the operator make where it is automatic.

Before you order

What is the elevator controller panel price?

Control panel price depends on configuration — simplex, duplex or group control — and on whether the drive is VVVF or a legacy two-speed unit being upgraded. Send the machine nameplate and the lift figures and we return a price against your actual controller, not a generic per-panel rate.

Can a new controller drive our old machine?

Often yes, if the machine and brake are sound. We inspect them first — fitting a new drive to a worn machine is not a saving.

How long does replacement take?

Typically one to two weeks per lift including commissioning and drive tuning. In multi-lift buildings we phase it so a car stays available.

Is this the same as modernization?

It is the core of it. Full modernization adds doors, cabin and fixtures, but the controller delivers most of the benefit.

Do you supply for other manufacturers’ lifts?

Yes. Send the machine nameplate and photographs of the existing panel and we will confirm what fits.
