Most elevator buying decisions boil down to one question once you strip away the brochure language: hydraulic, traction, or MRL? Each one suits a different kind of building, and picking the wrong one usually turns into a space or cost mistake rather than a safety issue. Let's go through what actually separates them, one at a time, with real numbers where they help.

Hydraulic

A hydraulic system uses a piston to push the cabin up from below, instead of a rope pulling it from above. That design makes it a strong fit for low-rise buildings, think homes and small commercial buildings, up to roughly four or five floors, where keeping things simple and affordable matters more than raw speed. The trade-off is that it uses more energy on the way up, and it hits a ceiling on how tall it can realistically go, both in terms of travel height and practical machine capacity. Traction

Traction systems use a motor, ropes, and counterweights, and traditionally sit with a machine room above the shaft. They handle far greater height and speed than hydraulic systems can, which is exactly why almost every mid-rise and high-rise passenger installation you've ever ridden in uses some form of traction drive. They're also generally more energy-efficient over long-term use, since the counterweight does a lot of the work the motor would otherwise have to do alone, which matters a great deal over years of daily operation. MRL (Machine-Room-Less)

MRL is a traction variant that tucks the motor inside the shaft itself, so there's no need for a separate machine room taking up roof space. That saves both roof space and, in a lot of buildings, real money too, since building and finishing an extra room is never free. It's exactly why MRL has become the go-to choice for a huge share of new mid-rise residential and commercial buildings built over the last decade or so. What most buildings actually end up choosing

In our own project mix, MRL has become the default recommendation for anything from about five to fifteen floors, simply because it hits a sweet spot of cost, energy use, and roof-space savings without the complexity of a heavier traditional traction machine room. Below that height, hydraulic still wins on simplicity and cost. Above it, or for very high-traffic buildings, traditional traction with a proper machine room often still makes more sense, since it's built for exactly that kind of sustained heavy use.

So how do you actually choose?

Height and travel distance rule out one or two of these options before cost even enters the conversation, a nine-storey tower simply isn't a realistic hydraulic candidate no matter your budget. Once height narrows the field, it comes down to whether your building has roof space to spare, how the energy-use profile of each system matches your building's actual traffic pattern, and honestly, what your builder or architect already planned for structurally.

One more thing worth asking your contractor

Whichever technology you land on, ask specifically how it performs during a power cut and what backup arrangement comes with it, since this varies more between systems than most buyers expect. A hydraulic system's behaviour during an outage looks different from an MRL system's, and it's a genuinely useful thing to understand before you commit rather than discovering it the first time the power actually goes out.
