Here's the single biggest misconception we run into when pricing home elevators: people assume cost scales with floor count alone. It doesn't. It scales with stops and total travel height, which is a related number but a genuinely different one, and it changes how you should think about your quote before you even start comparing contractors.

2-floor house

This is the simplest and cheapest configuration you'll find: one stop beyond ground, minimal travel height, and often a hydraulic or shallow-pit system with little to no civil work if a shaft location is already available. Space-wise, you're looking at a modest footprint, a compact 2-person cabin fits comfortably in space many homes already have sitting unused near a staircase, which keeps both cost and disruption to the build low.

3-floor house

Two extra stops mean more landing doors, more wiring runs, and typically a small step up in shaft height requirements. Your cost does rise here, but not proportionally to the extra floor, because the fixed costs (the cabin, the controller, the base civil work) are already priced in from the 2-floor configuration. Most 3-floor homes we survey still fit comfortably on a hydraulic or MRL system without needing to jump categories.

4-floor house

At four floors, traction or MRL systems start making more sense than hydraulic, both for energy efficiency and because they handle taller travel distances better. This is usually where the price ladder takes its biggest jump, and it's really the technology switch driving that, not the floor count itself. If your home is right at this boundary, it's worth getting a proper survey rather than assuming which technology you'll need.

Why stops matter more than floors

Here's a useful way to think about it: a 4-floor house with a lift stopping only at ground and the top floor costs less than the exact same house with a lift stopping at every level in between. That's because every stop adds its own landing door, call button, and wiring run, regardless of how many floors sit between them. When we survey a home, one of the first things we ask is which floors actually need a stop, before we quote anything at all, since it's genuinely one of the biggest levers on final cost.

Planning for the future, not just today

It's worth thinking a few years ahead when deciding on stops and capacity, especially if you're building a home you plan to stay in long-term. Adding a stop or upgrading capacity later, after the shaft is finished and the lift is installed, is far more expensive than specifying it correctly the first time. If there's any chance you'll need a stop at a floor you're currently planning to skip, it's worth discussing during the survey rather than after installation.

A note if you're building rather than retrofitting

If your house is still on the drawing board, this is the cheapest possible time to make these decisions. Reserving shaft space and rough civil work during construction costs a fraction of retrofitting a shaft into a finished home later, even if you don't install the lift itself until years after moving in.

Comparing quotes from different contractors fairly

If you're getting more than one quote, make sure each contractor is pricing against the exact same stop count, capacity, and finish level. It's surprisingly common for one quote to assume a simpler configuration than another, which makes the cheaper number look like a better deal when it's actually just a lighter specification. Ask each contractor to itemise stops, capacity, and finish separately so you're comparing like for like.
