Car parking lifts exist to solve one specific problem: not enough ground-level parking for the number of vehicles your building actually needs to fit. The systems available solve that problem in a couple of genuinely different ways, depending on your site's constraints and how many vehicles you're actually trying to accommodate.
Types of systems
Stacking lifts place one vehicle directly above another in the same footprint, effectively doubling your parking capacity per bay. It's straightforward and works well when you just need more capacity in the same space, without needing complex access logic for every single vehicle.
Puzzle-type systems use a grid of movable platforms that shuffle vehicles both horizontally and vertically, so you can access any car in the stack without needing every other car to move out of the way first. These make more sense for larger installations where a lot of vehicles are sharing a genuinely constrained footprint, like a basement parking level under a commercial tower.
Capacity ranges
Most residential and commercial installations are sized for standard passenger vehicles up to SUV dimensions and weight. Larger commercial systems can be specified for a wider range if you need it, but always confirm weight and dimension limits against your building's actual vehicle mix before ordering. A system sized for hatchbacks simply won't handle a fleet of SUVs safely, no matter how well it's built or how carefully it's maintained.
Cost in India
Cost here depends heavily on system type (stacking generally costs less than puzzle-type), capacity, and the civil work needed to prepare the parking bay itself. As with pretty much any elevator system, a number given without a site survey is a rough estimate at best, not something to plan a budget around with confidence.
Maintenance considerations
Car parking lifts see heavier daily cycling than most passenger elevators, since every vehicle in and out is a full cycle of the system. That means AMC frequency and spare-parts stocking matter just as much here as sizing does, so factor ongoing service costs into your decision alongside the upfront installation price.
Access and layout planning
Beyond the lift itself, think carefully about the approach and turning space needed to actually use it comfortably, especially with puzzle-type systems where vehicles need to manoeuvre precisely into position. A system that's technically the right capacity but awkward to actually use daily ends up frustrating residents no matter how well it was specified on paper.

A word on driver comfort
Puzzle-type systems in particular can feel unfamiliar to residents the first few times, since the platform positioning isn't always intuitive. A short orientation for residents when the system first goes live, even just a laminated instruction card near the control panel, saves the facility team a lot of confused calls in the first few weeks, and it's a small effort that pays for itself quickly.

Because a car parking lift handles vehicles rather than people, it's worth clarifying with your building's insurer exactly how liability works if a vehicle is damaged during operation. Getting this settled before installation, rather than discovering the gap after an incident, saves a genuinely difficult conversation with a resident later.
